Mexican corn tortillas are generally preferable, which is why they are used especially for quesadillas . However, wheat flour tortillas have gained great popularity.

If you’re a lover of Mexican cuisine, you need to know this recipe to prepare these typical wheat flour tortillas to enter the front door of the Aztec gods in style. After all, tortillas are the basis for many dishes:  enchiladas, fajitas, tacos or burritos , among others.

And do you know why they are called “tortillas”? Due to the similarity that the colonizers found upon arriving in America with respect to potato tortillas that were prepared in Spain. However, although both are circular in shape, it is evident that an egg and potato tortilla has a larger diameter than, say, about ten Mexican tortillas.

Wheat flour tortillas can be made with vegetable oil and butter. The recipe we’ll share next uses olive oil, so it’s suitable for vegetarians and vegans. The most important is the kneading and compression process, as this gives the necessary shape and diameter.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup of hot water (100 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil (15 ml)
  • 2 cups of wheat flour (250 g)
  • A bit of salt

Materials

  • Pan
  • Bowl
  • dough roller
  • hand mixer
  • Non-stick frying pan

Preparation

  1. First, boil a cup of water in a small saucepan.
  2. Then pour the flour into a bowl and add the salt, oil and hot water. Mix everything with the help of a hand mixer so that the ingredients are integrated and start to form a thick paste.
  3. On the other hand, check if the dough has a certain looseness  when stirring it  (that is, that it does not stick completely together) and, if necessary, increase the amount of water.

How to cook mexican tortillas

  1. On a smooth, clean surface, put a little oil (to do this, you must wet a napkin or piece of absorbent paper with the oil in advance). There you will knead the dough with the rolling pin for a few minutes until it is very soft and easy to shape. Elasticity is key.
  2. Take the clean bowl and grease the base (the outside) with a little oil. Now, take it to the fire to warm it up a bit; this will be your mold for making the tortillas.
  3. Place a small ball of dough in the center of the smooth surface and knead it with the hot bowl. Press for a few seconds and remove the pan. Take the resulting tortilla and place in a non-stick skillet (previously heated over medium heat).
  4. Repeat the procedure until you get the desired number of tortillas. It is very important that you grease the base of the bowl with oil every time  you make a new tortilla, this way it won’t stick and you won’t lose the dough.
  5. Also, remember that  tortillas should be left in the pan for as long as necessary to brown, no more, no less. When they’re done, place them on a plate or bowl and cover with a cloth while cooling to room temperature.

What to do if you have leftover dough

  1. If you have any dough left over, you  can wrap it in film and store it in the refrigerator for a  few days.
  2. As a last tip, don’t forget to heat the tortillas before filling them with the desired ingredients.

Mexican tortillas are very easy to prepare, so there’s no excuse not to make them. They take almost no time and, best of all when preparing them at home, is that they do not contain preservatives or additives that could alter their traditional taste.
